Description

Offered from a single-owner estate collection, this uncommon meerschaum-lined briar pipe is a fascinating piece of New York tobacconist history. The shank bears the distinctive "REX N.Y.C." stamp, a less frequently encountered variation associated with the historic Barclay-Rex tobacco shop of Manhattan, along with the personalized "DR REICHERT" designation.

Collectors will appreciate the unusual nomenclature, as pipes marked simply REX N.Y.C. appear far less often than examples bearing the full Barclay-Rex name. Combined with the DR REICHERT stamping, this pipe represents a distinctive survivor from New York City's golden age of pipe smoking and an appealing addition to any collection of American tobacconiana.

The meerschaum-lined briar combines the dry-smoking qualities of meerschaum with the durability and classic appearance of briar. The liner has developed an attractive honey-amber patina from age and use, while the briar displays a pleasing grain and rich finish. Despite its substantial construction, the pipe is surprisingly lightweight and comfortable in hand.

The meerschaum liner remains intact and structurally sound, with no observed cracks extending through the chamber walls. A small chip is present along the lower seating edge where the liner meets the briar bowl. This appears to be a stable, cosmetic issue that should not affect normal smoking performance. The original vulcanite stem fits securely, and the nomenclature remains visible and readable.

An uncommon and characterful Barclay-Rex-associated pipe, combining desirable meerschaum-lined construction, lightweight handling, and the seldom-encountered REX N.Y.C. / DR REICHERT stamp combination.
