Vintage Realistic Elderly Woman Japanese Ceramic Hakata Doll
Realistic and expressive vintage ceramic Hakata doll, made in Japan. Depicting an elderly woman, in traditional attire, seated with feet tucked beneath her bottom, occupied with some activity, possibly cooking?.
These were apparently popular in the 1950s with American servicemen stationed in Japan during the American occupation. These pieces are not glazed, and the paint is waterproof. Originally they had some sort of waterproofing (can be seen in shinier areas) but that wore off over time. Any use of water on these pieces will actually remove the paint, explaining a lot of the different stains and surface condition issues.
NOTE: Do not use water to clean. Unglazed. Will damage paint further. Please see above. See photos for further condition issues. All are surface paint issues. No cracks or dents.
