Vintage Handmade WWII Trench Art Italian Campaign Ring - Size 11
A fascinating piece of real history, this ring was created by a soldier during the Allied Italian invasion of World War II, 1943-1944. Known as 'trench art' and (in this case) most likely made from pieces of either bullets or artillery shells, it was a way that soldiers kept themselves entertained in wars going back centuries. Often times trench art would be made to commemorate a certain battle or campaign, and would be used as currency between soldiers, or as a personal memento.
This particular piece of trench art has been handmade from aluminum and inlaid with copper, and a piece of brass engraved "PALERMO 1943-44". Palermo, the capital of Sicily, was part of the spearhead campaign lead by General George S. Patton to liberate Italy and open a front in Europe. The Italian campaign commenced after the successful Allied campaign in northern Africa, and Palermo became the first European city to be liberated by Allied forces.
This is an incredible piece of history from a truly monumental time and place of one of the greatest conflicts the world has ever seen.
In very nice condition for its age.
