A lovely Herkimer "diamond" crystal mineral specimen. A Herkimer "diamond" generally is a name given to a type of colorless quartz crystal that is doubly terminated, has high clarity and luster and very well-formed crystal structure. Some people argue that the name is only officially applicable to specimens found in Herkimer County, New York, though others apply the name to any found in the region of upstate New York, and others will apply the name to any quartz crystals with the similar physical qualities. This particular specimen was found in Middleville, New York, which is located in Herkimer County, so it can very well be called a Herkimer "diamond".
