A large and visually interesting specimen from the iron mineral deposits of Covington, Virginia. The upper surface features well-developed botryoidal to stalactitic formations, rounded, finger-like protrusions that give this piece genuine three-dimensional structure. The surface carries bold burnt orange iron oxide patina throughout, with zones of dusty rose, pink and teal iridescence and a fine all-over crystalline glitter visible across the piece.
Known historically as 'turgite' (a hematite-goethite mixture) the iridescent colors are stable and do not shift with viewing angle.
